With schools closed, events canceled, and go-to activity spots on hiatus, it’s time to get creative when it comes to kids’ education this spring. Some school districts are implementing online learning, while others find it harder to instruct their student population remotely. If you’re in need of some inspiration for the week’s lessons, check out these options.

All Ages:

Harper At Home

Publisher HarperCollins presents Harper Kids from Home with daily storytimes at noon; Shelf Stuff, a video series for ages seven through 12 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m. EST; Epic Reads for young adult book enthusiasts, Wednesdays on Twitter and Fridays on Instagram at 4 p.m. EST. Adults can tune in to Harper Stacks every Monday at 3 p.m. EST for reading and programming resources.

Second Star to the Right

Virtual storytimes, online shopping, and curbside pickup/local delivery are available from this bookstore on Old South Pearl in Platte Park. They bring together children, young people, and adults for fun and learning.

Word Searches and Extra Activities

Denver-based doodler and designer Laura Kelly gathered 50 word search puzzles with links to extra activities, including recipes, crafts, and experiments for the whole family to enjoy.

Colorado’s Butterfly Pavilion published the first of their free livestream educational programs appropriate for all ages. Class topics include butterflies, arachnids, and other invertebrate sorts. Check out their social media pages for looks behind the scenes and animal spotlights.

New Cottage Arts Music and Art Lessons

History Colorado Hands-On History online

History Colorado Center’s new digital learning resource includes daily (Monday through Friday) live activities hosted by museum professionals via Zoom. Go deeper with other offerings such as online exhibits, biographies of notable Coloradans, Hispanic history resources, links to documentaries, and more.

Tweens:

Do a STEM Lab

The Curiosity Science Program helps young women build self-confidence and explore their interests through hands-on lab activities. They have labs online using bubbles, toothpaste, balloons, and other common household items.

Little Library Excursion

Take a walk to a little library hutch in your neighborhood (use this map) to find books while the libraries are closed. Travel guides are a common find, so grab one and make an interactive escape using pictures and fun facts you find on the pages.

School of Rock Remote

School of Rock, a music education school with locations up and down the Front Range, is now offering online music lessons involving their Method App, free sheet music resources, and Zoom video calls to instructors. Girls With Impact Online Entrepreneurship Academy

Young women ages 12 to 18 are invited to register for this “online mini-MBA.” The program, offered year-round with quarterly sessions, includes 10 weeks of coach-led classes, a start-up kit, training materials, and graduation with certificate. The fee, usually $395, is waived for this year’s spring cohort (starting March 31) in light of COVID-19-related education and economic complications.
